August 25, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- In a tribute to the former First Lady of Chicago, the city will be renovating a big part of what's considered our collective front yard. Maggie Daley Park will be the new name of a portion of Grant Park that's set for major renewal.
A world class park for a world class lady. That is how Mayor Rahm Emanuel described the future.
"Because of Maggie Daley's spirit, vision, she has touched thousands and thousands of lives," he said.
With the entire Daley family present, Emanuel unveiled the renditions of what will become Maggie Daley Park.
The project is to take place on the grounds of current Daley Bicentennial Park, which must be ripped up to make repairs of the parking structure which is below ground.
In making the announcement, Emanuel said it was the late Mrs. Daley's love of children that made him want to name the space after her.
"I want to say to rich, Nora, Patrick and Lally, I can't thank you enough for sharing Maggie with all of us and letting her touch all of our lives," Emanuel said.
Former Mayor Richard Daleywas brief in his comments, but was clearly touched by the gesture.
"Maggie loved this city," he said. "She loved its children especially. We're fortunate to have children in our lives and all of the children of Chicago Maggie felt were a part of her."
The park area is within Grant Park, and bordered by Columbus Drive, Randolph Street, Monroe Street and Lake Shore Drive. When it is finished it will include rock climbing sculptures, an ice-skating ribbon, and a play garden.
She was a big inspiration to a lot of people and well loved by those who worked with her, it's a great idea to name it after her," said Cynthia Gong.
Construction on Maggie Daley Park will begin this fall and conclude in the winter of 2014.
