Amtrak train from Chicago to Michigan derails

October 21, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Authorities say Amtrak Train 350 on its way from Chicago to the Detroit/Pontiac area in Michigan derailed Sunday morning.

A Chicago-based Amtrak spokesperson initially wrote in a statement that the train was headed from Michigan to Chicago, but that statement was clarified later Sunday.

According to the statement, the derailment happened at approximately 10:10 a.m. and that there were fewer than a dozen injuries.

"There are no reports of serious or life-threatening injuries," the statement read.

Niles, Mich. police said the train derailed at Progressive and Terminal, approximately an hour and a half away from Chicago.

According to the spokesperson, passengers who did not need medical attention were put on another train to continue to their destination.

Authorities say the cause of the incident is under investigation.
