Hurricane Sandy ComEd crews traveling to East Coast to help with power outages
October 27, 2012 (LOMBARD, Ill.) (WLS) -- ComEd is sending more than 240 crews from the Chicago area to the East Coast to help deal with power outages expected to accompany Hurricane Sandy.
Sandy also known as the superstorm is barreling toward the United States and could merge with two other storm systems. It could cause widespread power outages on the East Coast.
The traveling ComEd workers will help sister utilities in Philadelphia and Baltimore.
ComEd's John Schoen talked with ABC7 Saturday morning about preparations for local crews to depart from suburban Lombard.
"What they'll do is, when they arrive on the East Coast, there'll be a damage assessment that is done, and they'll begin to help with restoration efforts," Schoen said.
Schoen said the crews leaving from the Chicago area were expected to travel about halfway and arrive in Ohio Saturday. Then, the group would split in half Sunday and separately continue to Philadelphia and Baltimore to begin their assessments.
"It's hard to give a timeframe. They're prepared to stay and help as long as they're needed," said Schoen.
Altogether, approximately 700 ComEd workers will make the trip.
