Chicago's murder rate might be soaring compared to last year, but crime overall is at historic lows.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Monday that the city is in the middle of its lowest crime rate in decades and that overall crimes are down about 10 percent over 2011.

McCarthy said he gives credit to new anti-gang strategies for the decline.

Chicago's murder rate is still 18 percent higher than last year's, and shootings are up 10 percent, though those rates have dropped sharply since the summer's highs of nearly 60 percent.
