December 28, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Day laborers and their supporters gathered Friday morning at Gompers Park on the Northwest Side to call for an end to immigration raids.
They said they are not going to sit back as the raids go on. Instead, they plan to get organized.
One step is to offer training classes explaining workers' rights and what to do in case of a raid.
"This is not a welcoming city, and this is not immigration reform," said Eric Rodriguez, executive director of Latino Union. "If we're going to have immigration reform, let's do it properly. Let's have the right conversations and not come into communities and criminalize honest, working individuals."
The first training session is planned for January 5th.
