February 10, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- The Chicago Police Department has confirmed that two people are in custody being questioned for the murder of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton.
According to police, the arrest took place early Sunday morning. No charges have been filed, but witnesses to the shooting were brought in throughout the day Sunday to see if they could help identify the man in a police lineup.
"If it is true, it is very comforting to know there is one less killer on the street possibly," said family spokesperson Shatira Wilks.
Despite the news that two people are in custody, Wilks says her family is not getting their hopes up just yet.
"None of us will get our hopes up until, as stated, there are charges," she said.
The arrests come one day after Hadiya's funeral. A police spokesperson says the men were arrested early Sunday morning after being pulled over near Marquette and South Chicago Avenue, adding that Mayor Rahm Emanuel personally called Hadiya's parents to let them know.
"The mayor has been very comforting to our family," Wilks said.
A sophomore at king college prep, Hadiya was shot and killed in Hyde Park just days after performing at President Obama's inauguration.
Her story has attracted so much attention, first lady Michelle Obama was among those in attendance at Saturday's service. And Sunday, the White House announced the president will bring the gun violence debate to Chicago next Friday.
"We can't have too many conversations about it, you can't overdo it. I thinks it's great," said Wilks. "We didn't want her to die in vain. We want to keep her name out there to remind people."
There is no word on any forthcoming charges against the two men in custody, but Superintendent Gary McCarthy will have more information on the arrests at a Monday press conference.
