2 killed; 7, including boy, 9, hurt in Chicago shootings
June 6, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- A man and a teenager were killed, and at least seven other people were hurt in shootings across the city Wednesday afternoon. A 9-year-old boy was shot while riding in a car with his mother.
The boy was shot in the chest about 5:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Evans Avenue, police said. The boy was in critical condition at University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, police said.
A police source says the shooting may have been gang related, that the shooting target may have been a man who was in the passenger seat of the vehicle.
A car was surrounded by crime tape as police looked for evidence and bullets. Inside the car was a 9-year- old boy shot in the chest. Police say it happened on South Evans Wednesday as the boy was riding with his mother and her boyfriend, who was in the passenger seat.
The boy's mother drove him to the hospital where he is battling his injuries.
"It is so sad. It is not right for kids to get shot over this," said neighbor Dejuan Roseman, who lives in the same apartment complex as the victim. They say he lives with his mother and her five other kids. They say they have never noticed any gang activity.
"I don't think that is the case. Every time I see her, and I live in the building with her and communicate with her every day, and I just talked to her yesterday morning, and it was just her and her kids. Maybe her and her kids and her sister and cousin, but I don't ever see her with gang members or nothing," said Dee Roseman.
The Rosemans do say they are frightened over gang violence in the neighborhood. Their home at 65th and Maryland is also the same area where a 6-month-old was shot and killed in March.
"They shot a little boy over here. They shoot a 9-year-old boy. Just do something else, I guess. Have a great life and stop shooting kids," Roseman said.
A separate gang-related shooting left one teenage boy dead, and another seriously hurt in the Southwest Side Gage Park neighborhood.
Fifteen-year-old Miguel Villegas was killed when a shooter came out of an alley and opened fire on the two teens about 6:30 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, authorities said.
Villegas, of the 5100 block of South Mozart Street, died minutes later at Mount Sinai Hospital from a bullet that struck him in the flank, authorities said.
The other boy, also 15, was shot in the back and shoulder and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, police said.
Earlier, 20-year-old Jessie D. Clark was fatally shot in the 400 block of West 115th Street about 2:20 p.m., authorities said.
Clark was standing on a porch on the Far South Side when a shooter approached from an alley and shot him twice in the back. Clark, of the 11600 block of South Harvard Avenue, was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center several hours later.
Other non-fatal shootings across the city left 4 other people hurt, including three people wounded in a single gang-related attack in West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.
They were standing in a group near 123rd Street and Emerald Avenue about 7:25 p.m., when three shooters came out of an alley and shot all three of them, police said
A 25-year-old woman was shot in the right thigh, a 41-year-old man was shot in the left thigh and a 33-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, police said. All three were in "stable" condition at area hospitals.
A separate shooting in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood also wounded a man about 7:40 p.m. The 48-year-old was shot in the arm and leg in the 6100 block of South California Avenue and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in "stable" condition, police said.
Later, a 19-year-old man was seriously wounded about 10:45 p.m. in Englewood when a shooter approached on foot and opened fire while he sat in a vehicle in the 600 block of West 61st Place, police said.
The man was taken to Stroger with at least one gunshot wound to the chest, police said.
No one was in custody for any of the shootings early Thursday as detectives continued to investigate.
