August 8, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- If you're headed to the beach Thursday, stay out of the water.
The National Weather Service is warning swimmers to stay out of Lake Michigan because of dangerous swimming conditions.
High waves and strong rip currents are expected along the Illinois and Indiana shores.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore. They can easily sweep you out from shore into deeper water. This warning is in effect until nine 9 p.m. Thursday.
