Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is reminding Illinois residents Friday that checking the state unclaimed property website is free of charge.

"We have been getting reports of individuals who accidentally go to the wrong website and are asked to provide credit card information in order to find their unclaimed property," said Rutherford in a press release.

In 2012, the I-Cash program returned a total of $129 million in unclaimed property, a 27 percent increase over the previous year, according to the treasurer's office.

To find out if you have unclaimed property through I-Cash, visit www.treasurer.il.gov and follow the I-Cash link. The website is updated weekly to reflect new properties remitted to the office.
