Gov. Pat Quinn says he hopes creating a "Bring Your Parents to School Day" in Illinois will encourage more parents to get involved in their kids' education.
August 10, 2013 (CHICAGO) -- Gov. Pat Quinn says he hopes creating a "Bring Your Parents to School Day" in Illinois will encourage more parents to get involved in their kids' education.
The Chicago Democrat signed legislation Saturday to allow schools to let parents and guardians attend class and meet with teachers and administrators on the first Monday in October.
The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Kimberly Lightford, a Democrat from the Chicago suburb of Westchester, and Rep. Chris Welch, a Democrat from the Chicago suburb of Hillside.
Lightford says kids are more likely to succeed in school when their parents are engaged.
But kids and parents will have to wait until next year for their first Bring Your Parents to School Day. The law doesn't take effect until Jan. 1.
