Residents in Lakeview came together overnight Friday for a community walk to spread the word about stopping the violence on the North Side.
August 10, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Residents in Lakeview came together overnight Friday for a community walk to spread the word about stopping the violence on the North Side.
Residents walked with officers down Halsted, Belmont and Clark.
Alderman Tom Tunney of the 44th Ward organized the community walk.
It comes on the heels of a community alert regarding six armed robberies in recent days and growing concern of violence in the Boystown neighborhood.
"Most people here are here to have a good time and that's it, but we do have an element that does come down here to rob, to cause theft and to fight. Those are the individuals that we want to send a message to tonight that we're not going to allow that to happen. We're going to have zero tolerance," said Commander Elias Voulgaris.
Police say walks like this and an increased police presence are part of a new strategy to deal with crime in that area.
