Simon, Quigley officiate mock gay marriages

August 11, 2013 (CHICAGO) -- Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon and Congressman Mike Quigley are officiating mock same-sex weddings during a festival in one of Chicago's gay neighborhoods.

Both Democrats are in favor, but efforts to pass legislation have stalled.

Simon attended Northalsted Market Days Sunday. She says the idea is to illustrate the commitment of same-sex couples. Quigley performed about one dozen ceremonies Saturday. He says it's to draw attention to the fact that Illinois doesn't have same-sex marriage.

The Lesbian and Gay Bar Association of Chicago also participated.

Gay marriage advocates are ramping up efforts. Gov. Pat Quinn says he's hopeful there'll be legislation in the fall.

A same-sex marriage bill cleared the Senate this year, but the bill's sponsor didn't call it in the House because he said it didn't have the votes.
