October 10, 2013 (WLS) -- You'll notice tighter security in light of the Boston Marathon tragedy including more police patrols and more restrictions to accessible areas. But despite all that, the excitement is 'over the top' for an event which some call "Chicago's slowest parade!"
"It's the Super Bowl of running in Chicago. It's the day that everybody's been waiting for. Tens of thousands of Chicagoans and Illinois residents doing the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 13th. It's going to be a spectacular day," said Dave Zimmer of Fleet Feet Sports.
But it is also the first major domestic marathon since the bombing in Boston. Security is certainly on the minds of marathon organizers.
"Our comprehensive security plan and our relationship with the police department and our city agencies, I'm very confident that we will have a safe, secure and memorable race day," said Carey Pinkowski, Director of the Chicago Marathon.
While most of the security measures are top secret, runners and spectators will notice a few changes.
"The start and finish area will not be open to the public or will it be open to the general spectators. Also we're asking our participants to use a clear plastic gear check bag which we will issue them. This will help move the process along with our security personnel as they screen entrance to the park," said Pinkowski.
But the emphasis remains on having fun for runners and spectators alike.
"One of the great tours of the city of Chicago. They way the course is designed is that you get to tour some wonderful neighborhoods, see some great landmarks, really experience the ethnicity and the great fabric of this community," said Pinkowski.
"Boystown has a great section cheering on the runners, Old Town we have Elvis on stage singing and serenading the runners, go down to Pilsen, you have mariachis. You have a spectacular way to end the race going into Chinatown with the dragons, said Pinkowski.
It's a party where everyone is invited.
"Cowbells, clackers, make noise, whistles, cheer! These people have been putting in the hard, hard work all training season," said Zimmer.
"Everybody's coming down to put on a great event to celebrate individual commitment, dedication and sacrifice," said Pinkowski.
The experts say if you haven't run the marathon before and you plan to try it Sunday&don't do anything crazy. No more than you've trained to do. Don't get caught up attempting to keep up with the elite athletes. Just do your best.
Also the Chicago Marathon has some fund-raising efforts to help the people in Boston.
Finally, there is a cool little spectator guide with maps and information that makes it easy for you to follow the action. You can pick those up at Bank of America banking centers, the Health and Fitness Expo, at the race or at selected CTA stations.
