Man serving 111 years asking for new trial

January 13, 2012 (LINCOLN, Ill.) -- A central Illinois man who's serving a 111-year prison sentence is asking for a new trial.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports that 60-year-old Perry Alberts of Lincoln was sentenced in 2002 on charges related to the imprisonment and sexual assault of his girlfriend.

Defense attorneys now contend Alberts wasn't fit to stand trial because he was taking high doses of prescription medication and was "involuntarily intoxicated." They're asking for a new trial or a modified sentence.

Logan County Judge Thomas Harris has heard arguments on the issue. And prosecutor Jon Wright says they're still waiting for a decision.
