Gov announces $730K for work along Lake Michigan

October 13, 2013 (CHICAGO) -- Illinois is spending more than $730,000 on environmental education projects along Lake Michigan.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced the Illinois Coastal Management Grants on Saturday. He says they are important investments that "will protect and manage the incredible natural and cultural resources surrounding our beautiful Lake Michigan." The projects also will involve thousands of students and residents.

Quinn formed the Illinois Coastal Management Program in 2012 to protect Illinois' 63 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline.

The grants also will be used for environmental work in the Calumet region of the Millennium Reserve, located on Chicago's South Side.

Among those receiving grants is the city of Blue Island, which will get $30,000 to hold five workshops to raise awareness of area water trails.
