Courthouse bats removed from Lee County building

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Just in time for Halloween, officials in a northern Illinois county say they've managed to get rid of a bat infestation in the old Lee County Courthouse.

The Dixon Telegraph reports workers sealed off several sites where the winged mammals were likely accessing the historic building in downtown Dixon. They also closed off sections of an attic.

Rick Ketchum is chairman of the county board. He says that the bats seem to be annual visitors that show up in the fall and then disappear. He believes the animals have been living in the courthouse dome.

The building was finished in 1901.
