Former Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan is planning a trip to Vietnam next year, returning there for the first time since his release as a prisoner of war.

Kernan and his wife will be hosts for a February tour that will include stops at the site near Hanoi where his Navy reconnaissance plane was shot down in 1972 and a preserved portion of the prison where he was held for 11 months.

He had to cancel a trade delegation trip to Vietnam while he was lieutenant governor and said he hadn't found the right time to go since leaving the governor's office in 2005.

Kernan tells the South Bend Tribune he has no hatred toward the North Vietnamese and isn't sure how he'll react when returning to the Hanoi prison.
