Driver flown to hospital after I-65 rollover accident

  

August 3, 2012 (FAIR OAKS, Ind.) (WLS) -- A portion of northbound Interstate 65 in Indiana was closed Friday evening after an SUV reportedly flipped off the road, injuring those inside.

The driver of the SUV was taken to an Oak Lawn, Ill. hospital in a helicopter, according to a release from Indiana State Police.

According to a preliminary investigation, at about 6:05 p.m. Friday, a Chevrolet Trailblazer was in the left lane in the southbound portion of Interstate 65. Witnesses say the SUV started to veer and went off the road through the grassy median, flipping over several times before stopping upright in the right lane of the northbound lanes.

The driver, Mylan D. Jefferson, 31, of Indianapolis, Ind., was flown to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill. with life-threatening injuries. Jefferson's family had been notified of his injury Friday evening.

The three passengers, ranging from 17 to 21 years old, were taken to Jasper County Hospital in Jasper, Ind. with non-life threatening injuries. Two of the passengers were wearing seat belts, but the third was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car.

The northbound left lane of I-65 was closed for an hour and a half, according to Indiana State Police, to allow the removal of the Trailblazer, cleanup, and the landing of the helicopter.
