August 3, 2013 (GARY, Ind.) -- A sculpture celebrating Gary's melting pot history that was one of the highlights of the northwestern Indiana city's centennial celebration seven years ago is falling apart.
The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports pieces of black granite have fallen off the wings of a butterfly in "The Fusion" sculpture meant to symbolize the city's rebirth. The broken pieces of granite sit at the base of the statue that's been loosely cordoned off near City Hall.
Gary spokeswoman Chelsea Whittington says the Chicago artist who created the three-story statue, Omri Amrany, has "expressed his intent" to travel to Gary and repair it at no cost by the end of the summer.
The sculpture was unveiled in July 2006 as the city celebrated its founding.
