November 22, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- In 1621, 53 pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving by giving thanks for their harvest and their safety. Almost 400 years later, we are still saying thanks.
At Navy Pier Wednesday morning, the holiday spirit was starting to build. After all, this isn't just any Wednesday.
It's official: The holidays have begun. There are 31 days until Christmas Eve and Thursday is Thanksgiving, that day that makes us think about what are we thankful for.
ABC7 spoke with some Chicagoans around town. Here's what they said they were grateful for.
"I'm thankful for my daughter and I'm really thankful for my family. We've have been hard years so I'm really thankful for my family."
"Thankful for the air in my lungs. Thankful for just being here and being able to celebrate this holiday."
"We're thankful that we're together."
"I have a defibrillator and it's kept be alive for seven years."
"I'm thankful for everyday."
"I'm thankful for my job."
"I work for a wonderful family."
"Our parents, our family...life and ah pets."
"For having special people in my life and just be thankful for being living."
People, including Daisy Zhao who has her parents here from China, are thankful for many different reasons.
"I have a beautiful daughter and I have my healthy parents," said Zhao.
Outside Navy Pier on the North Side, ABC7 found some very thankful fishermen. They came here for perch but instead landed two beautiful brown trout or, in this case, turkey with gills.
"I'll tell you what. I've got a great family and I'm just glad we can enjoy some fish for Thanksgiving," said Paul Holland, Navy fisherman. "We're going to have fish this year."
