NewsViews: Hunger Action Month

This is Hunger Action Month, and ABC News is calling attention to what it calls a crisis in America. Millions of Americans don't have enough to eat.

In every corner of the country, a portrait of hidden hunger now emerging. The recession has pushed 2.4 million more children into poverty. Seventeen million children are now food insecure, meaning their parents often don't know where their next meal is coming from.

Simply put: 1 in 4 American children don't have enough food.

Before the recession, 26 million Americans were on food stamps. Now, there are 46 million, feeding 1 in 7 Americans.

On this edition of NewsViews, our guest and her colleagues are leaders in the fight against hunger. Kate Maehr is executive director and chief executive officer of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which serves both the city and suburban Cook County.
