NewsViews: Flu Season 2013

Monday, January 14, 2013

It's a nasty flu season this year. Why is that so? What should you do to protect yourself?

The flu had some Chicago hospital emergency rooms on bypass. Boston declared a public health emergency, and one Pennsylvania hospital set up a tent to deal with flu patients.

It's being called one of the fiercest outbreaks in a decade, starting in October instead of January.

But why did it start so early? And why is it so bad? To answer those questions and more, our guests on this edition of NewsViews are Dr. Lamar Hasbrouck, the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, and Dr. Emily Landon, with the University of Chicago Medical Center.
