July 28, 2013 (WLS) -- Last week, first lady Michelle Obama spoke to students who are part of Urban Alliance Chicago, a non-profit that works with high school students to get them into paid internships at major companies in Chicago.
The organization is currently in six high schools, such as Dunbar, Crane and Curie, and is expanding. The goal is to teach the students about dressing professionally, being on time, using public transit to get downtown, and to job skills. Students also get help applying to college.
Opportunities to get involved with Urban Alliance are still available to other students.
Student Briana Miller credits the program for her success. She spoke to ABC7 about the program, along with Urban Alliance Chicago Executive Director Sandra Abrevaya.
More about Urban Alliance:
Urban Alliance got its start in 1996 when an Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice asked a group of high school students what they needed to succeed. One teen responded 'a job.' Urban Alliance arranges paid internships for under-resourced high school seniors. It's expanded from Washington, DC to Baltimore and Chicago.
