The deadline for applying for a 2013-14 Wisconsin wolf permit is closing in.

The deadline is Aug. 1. Hunters and trappers can purchase applications online through the state Department of Natural Resources' website, calling the agency or by visiting authorized license agents. The applications cost $10. The DNR plans to issue 2,750 permits. Half will be issued randomly among all applicants. The other half will be issued through a lottery based on preference points. Recipients will be notified by letter in mid- to late August. Unsuccessful applicants will be awarded preference points for future lotteries. The wolf season begins Oct. 15. The season will run until hunters and trappers reach kill limits or through the last day of February, whichever comes first.
