August 1, 2013 (MADISON, Wis.) -- Veterinarians and others say they're noticing an increasing number of ticks in Wisconsin this year.
Pewaukee veterinarian Randy Schuett says it's one of the worst years he's ever seen. Schuett says he recently treated a Golden Retriever and suspected he had arthritis. Instead it turned out to be Lyme disease, which is carried by ticks.
University of Wisconsin-Madison entomologist Susan Paskewitz has researched ticks since the early 1990s. Paskewitz measures tick density out in the field. She says ticks are ten times higher than she's used to seeing.
The Journal Sentinel reports that for the first time in two decades of field surveys, ticks have been found this year in the Bong State Recreation Area in Kenosha County.
