August 8, 2013 (WEST ALLIS, Wis.) -- Gov. Scott Walker says he believes there would be significant bipartisan support in the Legislature to create a mandatory minimum sentence for those who illegally possess a gun.
Walker says such a measure also has his support. The governor's commented after a news conference was held Wednesday by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Police Chief Edward Flynn. They called for the minimum sentence and asked the state to provide $500,000 in matching funds to help pay police overtime to stem recent gun violence in the city.
The Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/17xrjlK ) reports Walker said that if the state provided those funds to Milwaukee, there would likely be a long line of mayors from elsewhere in the state asking for money.
Republican Sen. Alberta Darling is drafting a bill that would impose a three-year prison sentence for illegal gun possession.
