Government shutdown won't stop Wis. vets trip to Washington

October 10, 2013 (APPLETON, Wis.) -- Northeastern Wisconsin veterans are still going to Washington next week to see the war memorials, despite the federal government shutdown.

Post-Crescent Media reports organizers have adjusted the Oct. 17 itinerary for the honor flight based on which memorials are closed.

One of the organizers, Diane MacDonald, says they won't be able to go to the Iwo Jima Memorial or the Vietnam Wall.

Since 2009, Old Glory Honor Flight has organized trips for nearly 1,700 veterans visit Washington, D.C., and Honolulu to see the National World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the USS Arizona Memorial and others dedicated to veterans.

Initially, all the monuments in the capital were closed Oct. 1. But after two days of veterans storming the barriers, the National Park Service stopped barring visitors.
