Missouri girl allegedly raped by Maryville football star says her family was forced out of town

October 15, 2013 (MARYVILLE, Mo.) (WLS) -- Daisy Coleman said her family was forced to leave a small town of Maryville, Missouri, after she was raped by a popular high school athlete from a prominent family.

Coleman was 14 years old when the alleged attack occurred, and another teen recorded video on his cell phone of the sexual encounter. The 17-year-old football star was charged, but then those charges were dropped.

"He drove us to his house and we snuck into his house through his basement," Coleman, now 16, said. "He gave me a big glass of clear liquid and that's all I remember."

Witnesses said Coleman was crying as she was carried out of the boy's bedroom. Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White said he "absolutely" believes a sexual assault occurred. He said the football star even confessed.

"Which is why that we were, within four hours of receiving the call, able to have people in jail," Sheriff White said.

But then the case was dropped.

"The only reason the prosecutor didn't move forward with this case is because he didn't have any victims. The victims chose not to be involved in this case, they chose to not cooperate," Sheriff White.

"She told them everything. And I also talked to the sheriff and the captain and told them everything I knew. And that is also in the police report. So that is absolutely not true," Melinda Coleman, Daisy's mother, said.

Coleman said what followed was bullying at school and online. It got so bad, the family said, Coleman tried to commit suicide twice. The family felt forced out of town. And as they tried to move, their home caught fire. The cause- still unknown.

The football player's parents refused to comment to CNN.

Coleman's story is picking up steam on social media, and has gotten the attention of Anonymous, which launched #OpMaryville on Twitter. In a release, Anonymous writes, " If Maryville won't defend these young girls, if the police are too cowardly or corrupt to do their jobs, if justice system has abandoned them, then we will have to stand for them. Mayor Jim Fall, your hands are dirty. Maryville, expect us."
