November 7, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Saturday making it easier for Cook County commissioners to override a veto.
Cook is Illinois' only county that requires a four-fifths vote to override. The new law allows an override by a three-fifths vote.
That means 11 of Cook County's 17 commissioners, not 14, could override board President Todd Stroger's efforts to retain a controversial sales tax increase.
Quinn insisted, however, that he was not targeting any individual with the new legislation. He called the bill a reform that makes the county consistent with the state, where a three-fifths majority can override a governor's veto.
