The White House made clear Tuesday that the Obama administration endorses Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias for the state's U.S. Senate seat.

President Obama greeted Giannoulias, the Democratic Senate nominee, at the White House Tuesday.

Giannoulias was there for a Greek Independence Day celebration. He will also meet with a fellow Chicagoan, presidential adviser David Axelrod, to discuss strategy for the Senate race.

It's expected to be a hard-fought battle between Giannoulias and the Republican nominee, North Shore Congressman Mark Kirk.

Kirk charges that the treasurer bears some responsibility for serious financial problems at the family-owned Broadway Bank, where Giannoulias had been an officer.
