October 16, 2010 (WLS) -- Outgoing U.S. Senator Roland Burris says he is being encouraged to run for Chicago's top office.
Burris was one of many African Americans to appear at a public forum Saturday at Bethel A.M.E. church.
The candidates met with an organization called Chicago Coalition for Mayor. The group is hoping to find a single consensus African American candidate.
Burris promoted his qualifications but emphasized he would only run if the group decides he is that candidate.
Former U.S. Senator Carol Moseley Braun, State Senator Reverend James Meeks and Congressman Danny Davis Jr. were among several other high-profile local African Americans also in attendance.
Meanwhile, supporters of at least two other potential Chicago mayoral candidates were out Saturday gathering petition signatures to get them on the ballot.
Hundreds of volunteers met up for a meeting in support of Rahm Emanuel.
They then hit the streets to work on getting the 12,500 signatures needed to appear on the ballot.
Supporters of 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti also worked to gather signatures. After a meeting, they too spread out across the city.
