CHICAGO (WLS) -- Susan Shields is helping some friends stay in the swing of things at a senior center in west suburban Lombard.
A violin and piano instructor by day, Shields is sharing her passion for line dancing at the York Township Senior Center in west suburban Lombard.
"One day out of the blue my girl friend said lets go line dancing ...I said no I don't like country music I like classical music I'm not going ...so I went and I really had fun so I started teaching it," said Shields.
"Some of the dances are easier to handle then other ones. That's for sure. We keep it low keep for senior citizens," said Robert Chirko.
"I never thought I could remember steps or routines or anything and I finally came and I got hooked. It's really fun its a good time and Susan's a great teacher," said Maggie Lebhner. Her students range in age from 45 to 92. They have one thing in common; they are all hooked on line dancing.
"I think it keeps you mind really active...it keeps our bodies really active because on an average we do about 18 dances in an hour so that's quite a bit of exercise," said Marilyn Jennings, dance student.
"Keeps me in shape really for my age...and everything else I'm in good shape with it now...went to the doctor he said come back in six months and check your blood again and that's about it," said Jim Naff, dance student.
"I'm helping people to come and socialize...and then they meet other people and they get into other activities," said Shields. "That's the main thing I want to get people out of their houses and socializing."
