December 1, 2009 (NAPLES, Fla.) (WLS) -- Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts is considering Naples, Florida, as possible spring training grounds for the baseball team.
Ricketts and Crane Kenney are meeting with the governor of Florida in Tallahassee on Tuesday to talk about Southwest Florida, according to the Chicago Cubs. The day trip will not take them to Naples, where Ricketts may move the team for spring training in the Grapefruit League.
The Cubs have been training in Mesa, Arizona, with the Cactus League for years. Those spring training games draw crowds, according to the Cactus League, with the Chicago Cubs bringing the most fans to Arizona -- an average 10,690 fans per game.
Next year, the North Side baseball team can opt out of its 20-year contract with Mesa, which would end their Arizona training by 2012, for $4.2 million.
Ricketts met with Mesa, Ariz., officials in November. The Ricketts family purchased the Chicago Cubs at the end of October 2009.
