GM Daniels says Rangers 'want to make deals'
Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said he leaves baseball's winter meetings without getting any major deals "across the finish line" but did get a clearer picture of how he hopes to assemble his 2013 team.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said he leaves baseball's winter meetings without getting any major deals "across the finish line" but did get a clearer picture of how he hopes to assemble his 2013 team.
Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan didn't dismiss the idea that the club could afford both Greinke and Hamilton, even though that would likely put the team over budget. Ownership has the final call on that decision.
Daniels and his crew spent time exploring the trade market for outfielder Justin Upton and checked in on starting pitchers, including James Shields. They also talked about trading Michael Young, though a big hurdle in that deal remains -- whether the veteran infielder will waive his no-trade clause.
But as the Rangers headed out of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center on Thursday afternoon, nothing on any of those fronts was resolved yet.
"I think we have a sense of a couple of things that are possible and hopefully we'll be able to advance the ball there," Daniels said. "I feel like we have a better sense of what's real and what's not. We want to make deals. We don't want to sit here every day and talk about the idea of making deals. It just hasn't happened yet."
Daniels would not comment on negotiations with Greinke, potential trade partners or Young's situation. But he did confirm that his only meeting this week with Hamilton's agent, Mike Moye, was at the hotel on Tuesday night.
Daniels expects that he'll maintain contact and probably "circle back" to Moye in the next few days.
Daniels noted that in the past, his club has been at winter meetings when things didn't happen that week but groundwork was laid for future deals. He said he gets the sense that this year could be similar.
"We've been aggressive on the things we want to do," Daniels said.
