Kelly: Eagles keeping QB Foles
After announcing that Michael Vick would be his starting quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly said both Vick and Nick Foles will definitely be on the roster this year.
In other words, Foles is not going anywhere.
In a quarterback-starved league, a 24-year-old with six starts under his belt and a strong preseason performance would certainly have some trade value. A team like the New York Jets, where former Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is running the offense, might be interested.
But Foles' value to the Eagles is incalculable as Kelly begins his tenure, and the reason for that is Vick.
The 33-year-old Vick has missed 12 of 37 games due to injury since being named the Eagles' starting quarterback early in the 2010 season. In 23 games the past two years, he has thrown 24 interceptions. So whether it is because of injury or performance, there is a good chance Kelly will need to turn to Foles at some point in 2013.
"You don't have to look any farther than [Monday] night's game with the Redskins," Kelly said, "where RG III [Robert Griffin III] is on the sideline and Kirk Cousins goes down in the second quarter. In this league, you better have a couple of quarterbacks ready to go."
The Eagles also have rookie Matt Barkley, a fourth-round pick from USC, and Dennis Dixon, who played for Kelly at Oregon. If the Eagles were to move Foles, Barkley and Dixon would be their only alternatives should Vick get hurt or lapse into his turnover-prone form of the past two seasons.
Beyond that, there is the long-term future. Vick is with the Eagles on a one-year contract. If he is not Kelly's quarterback going forward, Foles very well could be.
So far, Kelly has tried to keep as many options open as possible at the position. Trading Foles would eliminate a very good option.
Foles said he would not seek or even welcome a trade.
"I want to be here," he said. "I want to be with the Eagles. I want to be with my team."
