Nonviolent offenders released to save money

  

November 10, 2009 -- The state of Illinois will begin releasing many prisoners Tuesday in an effort to save the state money.

The first of a group of about 1,000 inmates will be freed.

Inmates being released are nonviolent drug offenders with one year remaining on their sentences. Those inmates will be sent home and placed on electronic monitoring. They'll also have to undergo substance abuse treatment.
