May 7, 2007 (WLS) -- Mother's Day is coming up, and ABC7 Chicago wants to share a great story about some local moms who always put family first but are now finding a little time to pursue their own dreams.
When you look down Bea Borgus' street in Naperville, it's like any suburban cul-de-sac. But, walk inside her home and down the basement, you'll likely hear loud music, and it's not from the kids!
"I had always wanted to learn bass," Bea said.
For Bea, a mother of two, it was a dream to play the bass . For Trish, another mom, it was the electric guitar.
"Finally, one day I woke up and said I could talk about it or I could just do it," Trish said.
Both Bea and Trish started taking lessons about a year ago, not knowing one another. Trish said she even put an ad on the Internet, asking to form a mommy rock band.
"It brought nothing but hecklers," Trish said. "(They would ask) 'What are you going to do, sit on your back porch, drink and get a tattoo with your daughter in high school?' "
Those weren't very encouraging words. But, then, Dolly came along. She was inquiring about guitar lessons for one of her kids when she met Trish and Bea. Dolly always loved singing. So, the idea of an ensemble was born. But, they were still missing a drummer. Again, the trio placed an ad, and Sharon, who has played with a number of small bands, replied.
"I answered the ad and said 'I'm not a mom, but I have two god children, and I gave birth to a 10-lb. fibroid once, does that count?' "
So, an environmental scientist by trade, an author and mom of an eight and eleven-year-old , a painter with an eight and twelve-year-old, and a part-time TV personality (Dolly works for Naperville city tv) became the rock band "Playdate". Dolly's first job is mom to five children ages 2 to 10.
"I don't sleep much," Dolly said. "I actually have a wonderful husband and children that inspire me. They are my creative outlet."
The bands rehearses about once a month and has played at a few fundraisers. But, mostly, the moms play because they have always wanted to.
"It's a great feeling. I love it," said Dolly.
"I have more sense-of -self doing something that doesn't involve the kids," Bea said.
"My kids think it's super cool that I do it. They don't really like watching me, kind of embarrassing to them, but I think they like that I am a mom doing something different," said Trish.
