"Getting seven to nine hours of solid, deep sleep each night on a regular basis is just one of the many keys to good health and vitality," according to leading sleep expert, Jacob E. Teitelbaum, MD,

Teitelbaum is a well-known researcher, lecturer and author who treats individuals around the world suffering from disordered sleep, insomnia and severe fatigue. In his best-selling book entitled From Fatigued to Fantastic! (Avery Penguin 2001) Dr. Teitelbaum suggests a number of good sleep habits that will improve the quality of sleep as a major contributor to overall good health and vitality.

Among the simple and practical sleep rituals recommended and outlined in his book are:

  • Consume no alcohol before bedtime
  • Do not consume caffeine after 4:00 p.m.
  • Do not use your bed for doing work
  • Take a hot bath before bed
  • Keep your room cool
  • ·Stop the "mind race" by focusing thoughts on things that feel good and do not require much "thinking energy."
  • If you are plagued with problem thinking get out of bed and write down all of your problems on a piece of paper until you can think of no more; then go back to bed
  • If your partner snores, get a good pair of ear plugs and use them
  • Put the bedroom clock out of arm's reach and facing away from you
  • Decrease the amount of time you spend in bed
  • Have a light snack before bedtime - hunger causes insomnia
  • Get out of bed at the same time each morning, even after a poor night's sleep
