November 9, 2009 -- Chicago photographer Richard Mack celebrates 30 years of images showcasing the Great Smoky Mountains.
Celebrated Chicago photographer, Richard Mack, showcases a snapshot of his collection of breathtaking images in his latest anthology, Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Thirty Years of American Landscapes. Richard brings his images to life depicting his 30 year love affair with the most visited national park, the Great Smoky Mountains.
"Each time I travel to the Smokies I'm reminded why I put these photos to print: the vast array of color, the light, the virtual awakening of your senses when you arrive; I wanted to convey those feelings through the lens," comments Richard. "Whether I'm drawing the last ounce of sunlight on the crest of a mountain or taking snapshots of a couple celebrating their 60th anniversary in the park where they met, I continue to be drawn back to the beauty, the diversity, and complexity of the Smokies."
What began as a camping excursion for a "20 something" photographer has culminated into a 245-image book sweeping the array of seasons at this 75-year-old national park. From its lush dew laden prairie grass near Cades Cove to sunset from Morton Overlook after a late winter snowfall on Clingmans Dome, Richard's photos capture this pristine treasure spanning 800 square miles from Tennessee to North Carolina.
"Of all the books we have seen over the years, Richard Mack's book by far captures the timeless, awe inspiring, beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. His photographic journey through the park springs to life from the pages of this stunning book," Carl Gheesling, Store Manager, Great Smoky Mountain National Park Stores.
Previously, Richard published a widely acclaimed book, The Lewis & Clark Trail: American Landscapes, featuring images along the trail as Lewis and Clark originally experienced. In 2007, this book earned Richard the coveted "International Nature Photographer of the Year," award, in the professional category from the International Color Awards.
As a commercial photographer, Richard Mack has shot assignments throughout the United States and many countries around the world. But it's Richard's longtime passion for landscape photography that has caught the eye of numerous galleries around the country.
