Friday Flyover: Crete-Monee High School
October 11, 2013 (WLS) -- This week, we feature Crete-Monee High School on ABC7's Friday Flyover, celebrating high school sports!
Crete-Monee High School opened its doors in 1940 and in 2007 moved into its new state of the art facility. There are over 1,600 students in grades 9-12. In 2013 Crete-Monee High School was the 6A Football State Champion and the Special Olympics Basketball Champion for the state of Illinois. CMHS offers and accredited engineering program, Project Lead the Way, as well as a robust selection of Advanced Placement courses and an expansive duel-credit program with Prairie State College. In addition to a wide-array of course offerings, Crete-Monee High School prides itself on its variety of co-curricular opportunities for students. Whether singing in a musical, mentoring freshmen in the Ignition program, or sparring with friends in the Boxing Club, Warriors are involved in their school and ooze school spirit. The CMHS Warriors can frequently be seen sporting their school colors of Blue and Gold.
The Marching Warriors Band
The Warrior band program has a long standing tradition of excellence receiving accolades at local and state level competitions. The drum majors for the past three seasons have won the Best Drum Major award at every competition they have attended. Last season the band was named Grand Champions at the Olympian Marching Band Festival held at Rich Central High School. The concert band also received a Superior first place rating at the Illinois High School Association Organizational Contest. Last spring the band traveled to St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minnesota and performed at the Government Building as well as the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. The band program is growing each year and is looking to include over 100 students next year.
The Crete-Monee High School Show Choirs
The competition show choirs, Cavaliers and Faces, are frequently nationally ranked ensembles. They will compete in the national show choir competition in April. Our new Introduction to Show Choir Class, Diverse Voices, is our largest show choir and provides opportunities for students to develop their singing and dancing talents. All choirs will be featured in our concert next Thursday here at the high school from 7:00PM! Cavaliers and Faces were featured on ABC 7 three years ago on the inaugural Show Choir Showdown. In addition to members of the Warrior Marching Band, the students in the formations are members of the show choir, student government, dance team, Ignition student mentor group and members of the fall sports teams.
The Warrior Football Team
Under the direction of new head coach, John Konecki, the 2012 6A State Champions hope to have a repeat year. The Crete-Monee High School Warriors defeated Kankakee this past weekend with a score of 18-6. Tonight the Warriors will host their annual Breast Cancer Awareness game versus Bloom High School. For the last six years the football program has held their annual Breast Cancer Awareness game in an effort to bring awareness to this devastating disease and to show support to all of the women that are battling this disease. The "Pink Out" is our way to honor all of the women in our lives who have spent countless hours supporting us in all of our endeavors. Tonight's coin toss will be performed by a CMHS mother who is currently battling breast cancer, Mrs. Joyce Hutton.
On October 8, Warrior football player Nyles Morgan was selected to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Game. Nyles is a three year starter and currently ranked the #3 prospect in the state. He is currently ranked as the #4 inside linebacker in the nation and the 86th best prospect in the nation according to 24/7 Sports.
2013 football schedule is as follows:
October 11 (Home) vs. Bloom *Breast Cancer Awareness Game
October 18 (Home) vs. Rich South *Senior Night
