September 10, 2005 -- ABC7's "The N Beat," With Host Theresa Gutierrez, Kicks Off Hispanic Heritage Month By Celebrating Latino Pride In Chicago.

THE N BEAT is taking the pulse of Latino pride in Chicago by featuring Latinos from the world of business, arts and politics, and celebrating their important accomplishments. ABC 7 Chicago's Theresa Gutierrez hosts this half-hour special with additional reports from John Garcia and Stacey Baca, Saturday September 10 at 6:30 p.m. on ABC 7.

ABC 7's Stacey Baca captures the sights, sounds and pure fun of the 17th annual Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival in Grant Park, considered one of the largest events of its kind in the Midwest. Baca talks with one of this year's featured performers, the 2004 Grammy nominee, Chicagoan Angel Melendez and the 911 Mambo Orchestra.

With the explosion of the Hispanic population not only around the country but in Chicago as well, THE N BEAT offers an interesting snapshot of Hispanic history in Chicago. As early as 1960, Chicago emerged as the city with the third largest Mexican-American population. N Beat visits Bill Luna'a Mexican History and Culture Museum in Pilsen to track the immigration of Mexicans to Chicago from the late 1800s to present. The first consulate of Mexico in Chicago opened in 1884. Carlos Sada, the Consul General of Mexico in Chicago, is profiled.

Many Chicagoans may not know that 26th Street in Little Village is the 2nd largest grossing retail corridor in Chicago. The program explores how, with the help of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (IHCC), Hispanic purchasing power and business savvy has become a real force in Chicago, and is just starting to get recognition. ABC 7's John Garcia sits down with Fusion Technology Partners, one of the numerous entrepreneur firms helped by the IHCC.

With Los Angeles electing the first Hispanic mayor in 130 years, the growing Hispanic influence in politics often tops the headlines. Theresa Gutierrez talks politics with Congressman Luis Gutierrez, Aldermen Dan Solis and Manny Flores to get their take on the state of Latinos in politics and their predictions on if and when Chicago will have a Latino mayor.
