May 8, 2009 (WLS) -- ABC7 Chicago presents Asian Influences: Dream America, hosted by anchor/reporter Linda Yu, Saturday, May 16
ABC7 Chicago celebrates Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month with a half-hour special focusing on immigration reform and how it affects Asian Americans and their dream to live in this country with their families. ASIAN INFLUENCES: DREAM AMERICA, hosted by Linda Yu with with contributions from ABC 7 News Anchors Judy Hsu and Ravi Baichwal, will air Saturday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. An encore presentation airs on Saturday, May 30 at 4:30 p.m.
This half-hour special examines the complexities of immigration law and gets a close-up look at how the Asian American community is advocating for reform. The program also explores how many legal immigrants are forced to put their dreams on hold as they petition to be reunited with their family members.
Anchors Linda Yu, Judy Hsu and Ravi Baichwal talk candidly about their own families' immigration experiences and the pursuit of the American Dream.
ASIAN INFLUENCES: DREAM AMERICA shares the personal stories of Asian Americans struggling with immigration issues and an uncertain future here in Chicago. The program highlights the efforts of the Asian American Institute's work on behalf of immigration reform. From a 5th generation Japanese American family who has found opportunity in Chicago to a student hoping "The Dream Act" (which helps undocumented students access a path to legal immigration) becomes law, this program attempts to put a face on immigration.
Tuyet Le, executive director of the Asian American Institute and April Lewton, a community organizer with the institute, explain their views on complex immigration issues. Marilu Cabrera, spokesperson for U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services, shares her knowledge of immigration law and procedure.
ASIAN INFLUENCES: DREAM AMERICA will be available on-demand at www.abc7chicago.com.
Edgar Vargas is the producer of ASIAN INFLUENCES: DREAM AMERICA.
