Donated computers help disabled children

Even though computer technology is constantly changing, used equipment can be important to some organizations.

Eleven years ago, United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Chicago established ATEN - Assistive Technology Exchange Network.

"It takes in donations of used computer equipment, upgrades, adapts and modifies the equipment for kids with disabilities," said Greg Grill, program director.

Last year, they distributed almost $2.9 million worth of equipment to 1,823 schools throughout Illinois.

"We have technician in Tinley Park who will go ahead and modify the equipment. So if someone donates a computer system that's a little out of date, we're still gonna be able to use the memory, the keyboard, the mouse. CD-ROMs don't go bad with technology changing," said Grill.

Technology can be donated by individuals, companies and corporations.

"The benefits from the company, the corporation, the individual is not only to help a child with a disability, not only to divert items from landfills but also receive a tax benefit from their donation as well," said Grill.

Rickover Junior High School in Sauk Village has received computers from ATEN. They have a number of students with disabilities.

Thirteen-year-old Sabrina Hickman is one of them. She has cerebral palsy.

"I do my work on this. I take it from class to class, and I do my notes and stuff like that," she said.

Rickover's principal, Julie Inverson said she is grateful for the program.

"With a program like ATEN coming in and giving us their technology, it really helps, you know, widen their horizons and helps us offer more things," she said.

And it gives them opportunities to reach their goals.

"I either want to be a fashion designer or a radio personality," said Sabrina.

"Anyone in need of computer equipment, social workers, principles. school administrators have identified a child with a disability that need gainful access to a computer technology. In turn, they fill out an application form, send it to us, we process it and modify for what type of needs that child has," said Grill.
