Joint Center for Energy Storage Research could make Chicago area hub for battery technology

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=8904415&rss=rss-wls-article-8904415

A new multi-million dollar energy resource center could turn Chicago into the battery capital of the United States. The hope is that center will create environmentally friendly batteries for products like electric vehicles.

<dig:D3text>A new multi-million dollar energy resource center could turn Chicago into the battery capital of the United States.

The hope is that center will create environmentally friendly batteries for products like electric vehicles.

The goal is for Argonne National Laboratory to create a research institute for battery technology in Illinois that will combine research around the country into one location.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says Chicago and Illinois will become the center of that research and all the promise of jobs and economic opportunities that come from that.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu joined Governor Pat Quinn and Mayor Emanuel to announce a team led by Argonne National Laboratory has been selected for an award of up to $120 million over five years to establish a new batteries and energy storage hub in suburban Lemont.

"Very important for American industrial competitiveness, very important that research be intimately linked with manufacturing in a way that will actually propel the United States forward and this is what the hub concept is about," said Chu.

"To create in five years batteries that are more powerful and cheaper, we are taking coordinated mission driven programs here that will lead to breakthroughs in energy science and train and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers ," said Eric Isaacs, director of Argonne.
"We are going to develop batteries that are five times more powerful, five times cheaper within five years. That is an ambitious goal."

"Other labs were competing for this grant, which is why I am so proud that we here in Chicago and state of Illinois are going to be the center of a promising field," said Mayor Emanuel.

The hub will be called the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research.
It will combine the power of five Department of Energy national laboratories, five universities, and the private sector in an effort to achieve revolutionary advances in battery performance for electric cars and for use on our aging power grid.

Governor Quinn said he is providing millions of dollars to help build the state-of-the-art facility.

"This particular industry, this battery technology industry, is a $42 billion worldwide industry, and it's growing at about 8 percent a year, and we want to get part of that," said Quinn.

Mayor Emanuel said the hub will make Chicago the electric vehicle and batteries capital of the nation, and will create incentives to encourage the making of more electric vehicles.

The hope is that Illinois will become the epicenter of research on this subject.</dig:D3text>

Motorola Mobility moving HQ to Chicago from Libertyville

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=8750332&rss=rss-wls-article-8750332

Mayor Emanuel is calling it a ''game changer.'' Motorola Mobility is moving more than 3,000 jobs to Chicago's Merchandise Mart.

<dig:D3text>Mayor Rahm Emanuel is calling it a ''game changer.'' Motorola Mobility is moving more than 3,000 jobs to Chicago's Merchandise Mart.

The mayor says it is the city's largest jobs coup in decades.

The workers' arrival will complete the transformation of one of Chicago's most famous buildings into one of America's largest technology centers.

The owners of the historic Merchandise Mart cleared 600,000-square-feet of space to make room for Motorola Mobility, the Libertyville-based smartphone maker taken over by Google earlier this year.

Over 3,000 mostly higher-salaried workers -- engineers, designers, marketers and their support staffs -- will occupy the Mart's top four floors and rooftop.

"It's a gamechanger and we're now the, in my view, the tech capital, the digital capital of the Midwest," said Mayor Emanuel.

An ecstatic Mayor Emanuel smiled at news the deal had been closed after months of sensitive negotiations.

At the Mart, Google will join other technology firms and a business incubator for tech startups called "1871."

"There will be startup companies," Emanuel said. "Let's give you an example of their New York office that has now 3,000 employees--there's like 40 startups that all come around it. Other companies. This is a multiplier for job creation and economic development."

Last year, before being acquired by Google, Motorola Mobility signed an agreement to remain in Illinois in exchange for $110 million in tax incentives.

Governor Pat Quinn said that deal would stand for the company's new owner when it moves to the state's largest city from Libertyville.

"The bottom line is, we want to keep the jobs in Illinois," said Gov. Pat Quinn. "And it's important to have good technology jobs in Illinois that spawn other jobs for many, many different people."

The move to the Mart will happen during the next 15 months.

The Motorola brand was founded in Chicago in 1928. In a statement, CEO Dennis Woodside wrote,
"What better place to continue our commitment to the state, honor our heritage and recruit top talent?"

Mayor Emanuel did not shy away from using the announcement to further his political and economic agenda.

"Any time you add jobs it's a net gain," said the mayor. "We're leading the country in job creation and this will only confirm our leadership."

The mayor says the city offered no incentives to Google beyond what the State of Illinois granted last year.

Despite the tax increases, budget and pension deficits at the city and state levels, Google wants to be in Chicago, Illinois.</dig:D3text>

In a blog post, Viacom claims the satellite TV operator has "no intention of working with us" and that talks have "moved backwards."

In response, DirecTV says Viacom's statement is inaccurate and that it is ready to make a deal.

Last week, all Viacom networks were removed from DirecTV, including popular channels like MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.

Supreme Court upholds health care law; Small-business owners react

The challenges of having a small business have much to do about that bottom line. And if health care is in that budget, it's significant.

<dig:D3text>The challenges of having a small business have much to do about that bottom line. And if healthcare is in that budget, it's significant.
The Supreme Court narrowly upheld President Barack Obama's historic health care overhaul Thursday with the unlikely help of conservative Chief Justice John Roberts.

Some local small business owners say the health care law act helps them balance the bottom line with helping themselves and their employees while others say it will be a financial burden.

Bloodshot Records is the label behind dozens of indie rock bands. The music business can have its ups and downs, but recently the label's co-owner, Nan Warshaw, says a $6,000 credit has helped. The credit was for paying for employees' healthcare. Warshaw was glad to see the Supreme Court uphold the Affordable Care Act for the company's employees and the hundreds of musicians they represent -- some without insurance.

"I think it's great," she said. "It's sorely needed for the small businesses like ours. It's a great benefit."

Mark Weyermuller, owner of a property management business, was disappointed with the Supreme Court's decision. He says the cost of healthcare and other benefits keep him from adding employees. He expects the act will add even more burden to small businesses.

"I don't think healthcare will change all that much," said Weyermuller. "We have the greatest healthcare in the world, and we will continue to. It's just, it's going to end up costing everybody more money and it will just be the same."

Pattie Sheehan, a mastectomy fitter, has been watching the news of the Supreme Court's decision. Her clients are breast cancer survivors who she says will benefit from the act.
And she expects it to help her. She's currently pays $600 a month for her own insurance.

"For me, having an opportunity to get a more reasonable price on my insurance is going to be a big part of this," she said.
Sheehan hopes the savings for her insurance and a growing business model will allow her to hire employees. Right now she's a one woman show, but she says the act will help her be on track to hire employees next year.</dig:D3text>

Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma opens headquarters in Glenview

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=8688077&rss=rss-wls-article-8688077

Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma is bringing more jobs to the Chicago area as it opens a $140 million headquarters for the Americas in suburban Glenview.

<dig:D3text>Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma is bringing more jobs to the Chicago area as it opens a $140 million headquarters for the Americas in suburban Glenview.

The headquarters were in Deerfield but were relocated to Glenview with new facilities.
The move means a much larger facility for the company and a change to its workforce.

The move to Glenview has been in the works for about a year. About 1,000 company employees will be relocating to the new HQ. About 150 new, high-paying tech jobs will be added. It's all a part of Illinois Governor Pat Quinn's plan to increase job creation in the state by getting national and international companies to come.

"Jobs today the 21st century follow brain power," said Gov. Quinn. "We've got to make sure we invest in your abilities, in your minds."

Astellas is investing about $140 million dollars in Illinois as a part of its Glenview expansion.

"Access to health lies in discovering, developing and providing innovative medications for patients, as well as engaging in initiatives in countries in need of adequate medical care," said Astellas Global CEO Yoshihiko Hatanaka.

The corporate campus includes two seven-story buildings totaling 446,000 feet.
Along with the relocation of over 1,000 employees, the move creates 150 new high-paying tech jobs.

"We are here because we have a great wealth of talent that we can hire and bring in to help us meet the unmet medical needs of each of our patients around the world," said Astellas Senior Vice President Collette Taylor.

As an incentive, the state will give Astellas tax breaks and job training funds totaling $4 million.

"It's just another proof that Chicago and Illinois are really the center of the Midwestern economy," said David Vaught, Acting Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
We're the inland port. We're the central location where global companies like Astellas love to come and do business."

The company will not be eligible for those incentives if it does not meet its job creation goals.

Illinois ranks No. 1 in the Midwest as a place for foreign investment, according to state officials. Gov. Quinn said he wants to make sure it stays that way.</dig:D3text>

<dig:D3text>The Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center opened a new facility, 1871, at the Merchandise Mart Wednesday with rental space where digital tech startups can grow.

The name was inspired by the period of rapid innovation after the Great Chicago Fire in the year 1871.
The 50,000-square foot center has been designed to help grow digital tech start-ups.

"We believe that 1871, here in the Merchandise Mart, will create the next generation of great growth companies, really to be an economic development engine both for Chicago, the state of Illinois and hopefully the region as well," Kevin Willer said.

Organizers say since mid-January more than 400 startups have applied to rent work space in the facility, which has the capacity to house up to 500 individuals or more than 100 companies.</dig:D3text>
