6abc hosted a Station tour on June 8, 2011, at 11:00 A.M., for a group of ten Lower Merion High School students, along
with four advisors. Sports Producer Mark Meany knew members of the group, so he offered to give a 15 minute rundown
of a typical day in the Sports Department. He showed the group how all video is taped on P2 cards and ingested into
the computers. He also walked them through editing on Final Cut, as well as how to work the Electronic News
Production System. The group members were clearly excited about the information Mark was sharing, and they
expressed their curiosity by asking multiple questions about the different aspects of shooting, interviewing, and
editing.
After visiting the Sports Department, the group met Meteorologist David Murphy in the Weather Department. He
showed the group how to make graphics as well as how to put together weather maps. The group then took a picture
with him before moving on.
Next, the group observed the newsroom staff preparing for the 12 Noon broadcast. Both Mark and David invited the
group to watch the 12 Noon News live in the studio, so they watched off to the side until the first commercial break.
After leaving the News Studio, the group was shown the Control Room, so that they could understand both ends of
news production. They then proceeded to the Art Department, where Graphic Artist Seddie Stone showed the group an
overview of different graphics the department has put together, such as the Flower Show and the Thanksgiving Parade.

department, and the escorts were enthralled as well. 6abc's tour guide received a thank-you email from Dr. Jason Hilt,
Supervisor of Instructional Technology, Data Analysis and Business Education at Lower Merion School District, saying
the students had had a very rewarding experience.
The tour took a total of 90 minutes, and the students left with complimentary 6abc pencils and Action News "van fans,"

children to the Station for a tour. The group came from Clearview Regional Summer Program in Mullica Hill, N.J., and the
kids' ages ranged from 10-15 years old. Once the group arrived, they were split into two groups of 15 apiecewhile one
group was touring, the other group waited patiently in the hallway with an adult supervisor.
The 6abc tour guide took the first group straight to the News Studio so they could get in and take pictures before the
12 Noon News broadcast. While in the studio, all of the kids took turns taking pictures by the green screen as well as
at the anchors' desks. After leaving the studio, the group stepped outside and were shown the Action News van

the tour.
The school's mission is to encourage students to explore their passions and strengthen those passions through real
world learning experiences. Ms. Hundly felt that visiting the news station would provide an opportunity for inner-city
children to broaden their horizons and discover passions in the media field. Rick Harris of the Action News Technical
Department also referred them to this tour.
Since the three groups were so large, the tour was strategic in the sense that it was quick, yet information-packed. The
first group started their tour in the Sports, Special Projects, and Weather offices in the newsroom. In the Weather
Department, the tour guide explained how the weather production works behind the scenes. The group proceeded to
the Control Room and then the Art Department, where Graphic Artist Chris Prasol explained what the department does

Action News van garage and then into the News Studio where the kids took pictures in front of the anchors' desk and
the green screen.
The tours for the second and third groups were almost identical to the first, with adequate time for each group to look
around the News Studio before the 4:00 PM News. Each tour lasted approximately 45 minutes. Afterwards, the tour
guide sat with the entire group for a question-and-answer session in case there were questions not answered or

the Control Room and the News Studio and how they are mutually dependent on each other. The children also asked
questions about the cameras and the teleprompter. Afterwards, the group went to the Art Department. The artists were
not there, but the video compilation was up on the screen, so the tour guide could play it for the group. A few of the
kids were interested in art, so they found the graphics extremely interesting. The tour concluded outside by the Action
News van garage and then inside the News Studio where the kids took pictures in front of the anchors' desk and in
front of the green screen.
The second group had the same tour except that Meteorologist David Murphy was not in the Weather Department.
Weather Producer Paul Trombello showed the group around the Weather office instead. And Graphic Artist Chris Prasol
was in the Art Department, so in addition to showing the video compilation, he was able to explain more about the
function of the Art Department. At the end of both tours, all the kids received 6abc pencils.

that the Assignment Desk was soundproof. They then proceeded to the Sports, Special Projects, and Weather offices.
No one was in the Weather office; however, the tour guide explained how one becomes a meteorologist, the training
involved, and what the job entails. Afterwards, the group visited the Control Room and the News Microwave area. In
the Art Department Graphic Artist Chris Prasol showed the group a video compilation and let the kids use the tablets to
