Poll: NCAA sanctions on Penn State too severe

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - August 2, 2012 (WPVI) -- A new poll finds significant opposition among Pennsylvania residents to NCAA sanctions leveled against Penn State.

Forty-four percent of Pennsylvania adults say the NCAA penalties are too severe, 14 percent call them appropriate and 33 percent say they're not tough enough. Opposition rises above 50 percent among Pennsylvania residents with Penn State ties.

That's according to a Quinnipiac University/CBS News/New York Times poll out Thursday.

The NCAA fined Penn State $60 million, imposed a multi-year bowl ban, invalidated 112 wins and took away future scholarships over the school's handling of child sex abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

The penalties have stirred an outcry among Penn State alumni who say they are unfair.

The poll of 1,494 people has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
