HUNTING PARK- September 16, 2008 - (WPVI) -- The Pennsylvania SPCA says an undercover operation at two urban puppy mills ended with 31 dogs being confiscated.
Agents say an undercover investigator bought a five-week-old pit bull mix from the breeder along the 1700 block of Moore Street in South Philadelphia over the weekend.
The dog had worms and was described as being relatively sick.
Based upon that discovery, coupled with that site being busted back in 1994, officials served a search warrant on that site Tuesday.
The search uncovered dogs in cages in the kitchen, basement and backyard. Most had worms and were living in unsanitary conditions. The SPCA adds the puppies, which were being sold for profit, were being sold prior to 7-weeks, which is the earliest time, according to the law, that dogs can be marketed.
Officials say some of the dogs came from a second site but they are not releasing information on that site yet.
The owner of the property on Moore Street is still being sought in connection with the investigation.
