Autistic boy left on bus; driver fired

Friday, November 06, 2009

A central Pennsylvania school district says a bus driver has been fired after a 6-year-old autistic boy was left on a bus.

Tiffany Williams said her son, Dante, a student at Carter & MacRae Elementary School, was found only after she called Wednesday afternoon to ask where he was. She said he was brought home unharmed shortly before 5 p.m. by another driver who told her the boy had been "sound asleep."

Heidi Kraft, a spokeswoman for the Lancaster school district, called it "an unfortunate incident" and said officials were glad the child was safe. She says the bus driver involved was immediately terminated and other drivers were given a review Thursday of company protocol, which includes a check of the bus at the end of the route.

Officials at the bus company, Shultz Transportation Co., did not immediately return a message seeking comment Friday.
