Rare November lightning bolt hits house

Friday, November 20, 2009

A rare late November thunder storm sparked a lightning strike that badly damaged a house in Haverford, Montgomery County.

Friday morning at about 2:00, the bolt hit the roof of the house on the 100 block of Cheswold Lane, just off Montgomery Avenue.

Flames gutted the attic.

It took about 45 minutes for crews to get the fire under control.

By then the attic and other parts of the house were badly damaged.

The man who lives in the home and his dog managed to get out safely.

The storm's heavy rains, high winds and occasional lightning also downed several power lines in the area, knocking out power to a small number of households.
