NJ teen, with cancer, asking Taylor Swift to prom

Thursday, February 23, 2012

One sister's request for her cancer-stricken brother has gotten the attention of thousands on the internet and the hope is it will get the attention of one more - Taylor Swift.

18-year-old Kevin McGuire of Stratford is currently being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for a relapse of the leukemia he was first diagnosed with five years ago.

The intense chemotherapy he's now undergoing means he'll go bald soon and he worried aloud to his big sister Tori that no one would want to go to the prom with a guy who has no hair.

"I said what if I got Tylor Swift to go to the prom with you? His eyes lit up for the first time since he was diagnosed," Tori told Action News Thursday.

So Tori set up the "Taylor Swift take Kevin McGuire To Prom!" page.

At 9:30 p.m. Wednesday over 17,000 accepted the invite to the page, by midnight it was past 23,000. By the time this story aired on Action News at 6 Thursdsay, it was over 50,000.

Plus, #teamkevin was trending throughout Wednesday night on Twitter - including tweets from football great Emmitt Smith, Adult Swim, Perez Hilton, and rapper Travie McCoy who wrote, "#TeamKevin let's help this fella out guys!"

Kevin attends Sterling High School in Somerdale where he played football and was featured in 2010 on Channel 6's High School Huddle show.

"Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18-year-old a person could even fathom meeting, and throughout his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned 'why me?'" Tori wrote on the Facebook page.

And to Kevin, Taylor Swift - a multi-time Grammy Award winner and Pennsylvania native - is the ideal prom date.

"Someone who's confident, someone who will make me have a good time and not feel like a sick kid," Kevin said.

The kid they call Superman will summon all his strength if the pop princess calls and says yes to the prom.

So it seems it is now up to Taylor Swift herself.

A message to Taylor Swift's publicist was not immediately returned

We can only wonder, though Kevin is older than "Fifteen," will the "Fearless" high school senior see "Sparks Fly" if his prom becomes "The Story of Us" between him and Taylor Swift?

It is safe to assume that the Sterling High school student would like to say "You Belong With Me" at the prom to Ms. Swift.

And one more thing.

The Sterling High Senior Prom falls on Kevin's birthday.

What a birthday present it would be to escort his favorite singer to such an important event.

So what do you say, Taylor?
